  East Berlin has a very interesting history which everyone loves to read. In 1764, John Frankenberger bought 200 acres of land from William Penn's sons, Thomas and Richard Penn. He divided it into 85 lots with alleys and streets and named it "Berlin" after Berlin, Germany, therefore the capital of his native country, the Kingdom of Prussia. As a result of confusion with another community in Pennsylvania, the name was changed to " East Berlin ." East Berlin had approximately one hundred houses by 1797, under the new owner John Hildebrand. When York County was divided in 1800, East Berlin was absorbed into the newly formed Adams County.
